This is a breaking change but (A) it seems unlikely that any code other than that in this tree is using this API and (B) i'll volunteer to update anyone's code which is broken by this change. This is a hypothetical/proactive fix for a problem which has not yet been seen in the wild but seems very likely, given recent locking issues reported by Mark.
